Welcome monument installed at Mission San Luis Rey

OCEANSIDE — Crane workers and an installation crew took two days to install a 12-by-25-foot monument at the entrance of Mission San Luis Rey. The massive white monument was solidly in place at the entrance of Mission San Luis Rey on Dec. 6.
Terry Elkins, an artist from Bridgehampton, N.Y., witnessed the installation while he was painting an oil on canvas of the mission chapel. “They put it up yesterday,” Elkins said. “It looks pretty good.”
Final finishes on the monument will soon be completed. The carved letters that spell out the mission’s name will be painted and an antique bell will be added to the top niche of the monument.
The entrance monument is the first installation in the master development plan for the mission that includes cemetery expansion, interpretive gardens, a retirement center, additional parking and a friary. Mission development will have a “green” focus with native plants, water reclamation systems and the use of recycled products in the development.
