RANCHO SANTA FE — With special commemorative shovels in hand, a dozen leaders and planners for the new Village Community Presbyterian Church dug in deep Dec. 7 to kick off the groundbreaking ceremony for its church campus expansion.
“We are blessed to have this blessing,” Reverend Jack Baca said. “And with this new facility we will be able to spread our Christian message around the world.”
More than five years in the planning, the $19 million church campus rebuilding program will take approximately 16 months to complete, according to Don MacNeil, chairman of the Building Committee for the Village Church.
One of the new structures, the two-story Sanctuary building, will have a seating capacity for 592, including a new worship space, music facilities and administrative offices. The existing sanctuary is being demolished except for the original front portion of the building, which will be used as a small chapel for weddings and funerals.
The second building is a two-story Christian Education Building used primarily for Sunday school. The new structures were designed by San Diego-based Domus Studio Architects and will be built by ROEL Construction Company. “This will be our most important project to date,” Kevin Elliott, head of the ROEL Construction Company, said at the groundbreaking ceremony.
Prior to the groundbreaking ceremony, Sunday worshipers were treated to a video presentation describing the new expansion in detail, with renderings and drawings to help illustrate the completed project. At this time, only the new Sanctuary is being built. No date has yet been set for the start of the Education building.
More than 100 people were on hand to witness the groundbreaking ceremony followed by refreshments and conversations with friends and fellow parishioners.
