CARMEL VALLEY — For the Torrey Pines High School Boys Golf Team, the regular season has finished, and the team is ready to come out to the CIF Tournament swinging.
They concluded the regular season May 7 after a narrow 365-372 win over rival La Costa Canyon High School on the TPHS home course. Following a 16-stroke loss to LCC earlier that week, the TPHS win placed the team second in the Avocado League, a far cry from the fourth place standing held earlier in the season.
“We had a few unexpected losses to Poway (High School) and San Pasqual (High School) in the beginning, but our season is turning out pretty good,” sophomore Michael Kim said.
From Kim’s perspective, the season is far from ending, as he holds lofty goals for himself and the team.
“We can win state,” Kim said. “The team and I have enough talent to do it. We should be able to win every match no matter who the opponent.”
Because of this determination and drive instilled in Kim and the rest of the team, first-year coach Jay Pearlman claims his job is much easier. According to Pearlman, each team member is individually motivated.
“These guys work really hard, and they do everything on their own,” Pearlman said. “We couldn’t play the 18th hole (on May 7) because it was too dark, but I looked over and one of my players was putting alone in the dark.”
At the recent North County Conference Tournament, the team placed second in the conference behind rival La Costa Canyon High School. TPHS golfers Jay Hwang and Kim tied with 144 for the top individual scores at the tournament.
While silver may seem to be a trend for the Falcons, at the CIF tournament finals May 27 at Warner Springs, the team hopes for gold.
