Thief apprehended after pursuit in Rancho Santa Fe

RANCHO SANTA FE — Encinitas Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call at the 700 block of San Mario Drive in the city of Solana Beach to investigate a report of suspicious persons checking the doors of parked vehicles in the neighborhood in the early morning hours Oct. 11. 

As they responded to the call, the suspects were seen leaving the area in a small sized SUV. Deputies observed the suspect vehicle nearby and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. The suspect vehicle failed to stop and the deputies pursued the vehicle into the Rancho Santa Fe area.

The suspect vehicle failed to negotiate a turn and collided with a telephone poll guide wire at the intersection of Villa de la Valle and Las Colinas.

The driver then intentionally backed into the vehicle of a pursuing deputy causing minor injuries to the deputy.

The suspects fled on foot into the surrounding area.

Deputies were able to apprehend the driver of the suspect vehicle a short distance away. Inside the suspect vehicle, deputies found burglary tools and several items believed to have been stolen during multiple burglaries.

The driver was identified as 19-year-old Aaron Martinez of Escondido. He was booked on charges of vehicle burglary, possession of stolen property, possession of burglary tools, assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, felony failure to yield and felony resisting arrest. Detective Shawn Silva of the Encinitas Station is conducting the follow up investigation and attempting to identify the additional suspects as well as any additional victims.
