ENCINITAS — Full Moon Poets will present its next La Paloma Summer Poetry Slam, Sept. 11, at the La Paloma Theatre in downtown Encinitas, 471 S. Coast Highway 101. Admission is free. The slam begins at 7 p.m., but poets wishing to enter should be at hand by 6 p.m.
Each year, the Full Moon Poets present two major poetry slams at the historic La Paloma Theatre, one in the summer and one in the winter. According to organizer Danny Salzhandler, these are the largest poetry slams in San Diego county, packing the theater with about 400 people. The competition is now in its 12th year and draws poets from well outside the county.
For interested poets, all names will be placed in the famous popcorn bucket and the first 17 names pulled will be the line-up for the night. There are three elimination rounds going from 17 poets to eight and then to a final three for the last round. Prize money collected from the audience will go to the winners. No props, musical instruments, costumes or recorded music allowed. Poets need three poems that do not exceed three minutes each. For more information and rules go to fullmoonpoets.org/slams.html.
To cover the costs and to keep it free to the poets and public, Full Moon Poets is looking for 15 sponsorships at $100 each. Sponsors will have their name printed on the event posters and listed on the event website. Those interested in sponsoring should contact Rick Moore at (858) 414-4962.
