Summer in Cardiff is well under way

For, lo, the winter is passed and Cardiff-by-the-Sea is gearing up for a long, hot summer of fun so join in and enjoy.
The Cardiff-by-the-Sea Library kicked off their summer reading program, Splashes, on June 26 with Literature Comes to Life with Stacy Wein, so be sure to sign up for fun and prizes and pick up your Cardiff-by-the-Sea passport, visit the local businesses and get them checked off. The adult reading program, Make Waves, is also under way so no matter your age, reading fun waits at the library.
Cardiff 101 MainStreet with be holding a sundowner from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. July 13 at the San Elijo Lagoon Nature Center, 2710 Manchester Ave. There will be refreshments, door prizes and a chance to meet your neighbors and local shopkeepers so don’t miss this fun happening. Stop by the office at 124 Aberdeen Ave. and check out the new merchandise.
Tess is there from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Wednesday.
From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 14 the annual Dog Days event will be held on Liverpool and Aberdeen with booths, food and fun and an entertaining day for both dogs and people. Visit www.cardiffdogdaysofsummer.com for more information.
The Friends of the Cardiff-by-the-Sea Library will be holding their half-price book sale at the library from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Aug. 14. London/Paris/Rome/Cardiff-by-the-Sea name drop T-shirt wearers will take home a free book. If you purchase a shirt that day, you will get a free membership good through December and shirts will be available at Dog Days, where Friends of the Cardiff-by-the-Sea Library will have a booth, as well as at the library. New colors, ladies styles and children’s sizes, have been added and they are available at Postal Annex + of Cardiff with proceeds benefiting the Friends of the Library.
The Friends of the Cardiff-by-the-Sea Library were pleased to once again reward four deserving graduating seniors with $1,000 scholarships June 5 and you may see the smiling faces of the students at www.friendscardifflibrary.org.
We continue to receive donations to enlarge and enhance our Dane Olson Memorial surfing collection of books, DVDs and videos. Dane was a young surfer who lived in and loved Cardiff-by-the-Sea and after his untimely passing the family set up this memorial which continues to grow and is extremely popular. Be sure to check out the great display table of surfing materials that Lori has for your reading pleasure.
Cardiff Elementary School will entertain with movies in the Cardiff Town Center this summer. They start at dark. Bring your own chair and proceeds from sale of refreshments benefit the school.
Cardiff-by-the-Sea, established by J. Frank Cullen in 1911, will be celebrating its centennial in 2011. Events are being planned by both the Friends of the Library and the Cardiff 101 MainStreet; an agenda will be available when all is completed.
