State swaps property to expand Carlsbad beach area

COAST CITIES — The California Assembly Committee on Business and Professions passed Assembly Bill 1052 on May 2, authored by California Assemblyman Martin Garrick, (R-Carlsbad), which provides a mechanism for a property swap with the city of Carlsbad and California State Parks.
The properties involved are commonly referred to as the “Manzano” property and include 26 acres of land adjacent to South Carlsbad State Beach and Carlsbad Boulevard. The property exchange would allow the city to realign Carlsbad Boulevard and give State Parks more beachfront access for residents, visitors and campers who frequent the beach area.
“Carlsbad Boulevard has been plagued for years with congestion and washout issues that end up costing taxpayers millions to repair. This bill will allow the city to replace the road in a more appropriate area and provide state parks with valuable space that could be used to expand the campground area,” Garrick said.
The Committee voted 9-0 in favor of the bill and took little time to deliberate the issue due to its bipartisan support.
“Given our current budget situation, this bill makes perfect sense and is a win-win for the state and city. The city has worked tirelessly over the last few years on planning the project and I am glad that I can play a part in helping them realize their goals,” Garrick said.
AB 1052 will likely be heard in the Assembly Appropriations Committee at the end of May before heading the Assembly Floor.
Garrick serves the communities of Carlsbad, Del Mar, Solana Beach, Encinitas, Rancho Santa Fe, San Marcos, Vista and portions of San Diego, Escondido and Oceanside as the Assemblyman for the 74th District.
