Solana Beach to ban public urination

SOLANA BEACH — City Council adopted at its June 10 meeting the first reading of an ordinance prohibiting a behavior that surprisingly wasn’t already illegal.
Sheriff deputies from the Encinitas station contacted city staff asking for help when dealing with public urination, which increases at night in streets and alleyways, particularly in areas with late-night entertainment. Other than giving a verbal warning, deputies had no means to control the behavior because prior to the introduction of the ordinance, the city had no law prohibiting public urination or defecation.
Once the ordinance takes effect 30 days after it is adopted at the second reading, violators will be charged with a misdemeanor.
There was no council discussion or community input prior to the unanimous vote.
