Solana Beach celebrates Cinco de Mayo

SOLANA BEACH — A live mariachi band, dancers, game and craft booths, fun jumps, piñatas, face painting and authentic Mexican cuisine were all part of the annual Cinco de Mayo celebration at La Colonia Park on May 4.The free event was hosted by the city’s Parks and Recreation Department, Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito and Del Sol Lions Club, which provided free vision and health checks.

Mariachi Orgullo de San Diego culminated a performance by singing “Happy Birthday” to 12-year-old Mariela Mejia of Solana Beach.

Dance troupes included Ballet Folklorico Tamazuchule and El Grupo Herencia Mexicana.

San Dieguito’s approach toward devices is in contrast with that of the EUSD (Encinitas Union School District), which spent $1.7 million in bond money on 3,500 personal iPads for its third through sixth graders. Photo by Jared Whitlock
