Skin art goes big at museum

OCEANSIDE — Expanding on the tattoo body art of their subject, Anna Stump and Ted Meyer will create a large-scale painting with a live model during their “Exploding Tattoo” performance at the next Artists@Work from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 9 at 704 Pier View Way.

Through performance installation and photographic documentation, Stump and Meyer explore contemporary body fixation, and the fascination with tattoo decoration appropriated from pop imagery and exotic religious iconography.

Each Artists@Work event is designed to give guests a first-hand look at the creative process while engaging with a different diverse artist each month. This creative happy hour includes complimentary appetizers and an open beer and wine bar. Tickets are $15 for OMA members or $20 for nonmembers. Visit oma-online.org or call (760) 435-3721 for reservations.

On the second Thursday of most months OMA will showcase a different artist by commissioning them to produce an original artwork live in front of guests, with the aim of exploring all mediums of creation including ceramics, painting, installation, sculpture and more. During selected months Artists @ Work will showcase artists whose work is currently on view at the museum, giving guests an in-depth look at some of OMA’s 2012 exhibitions.

All OMA exhibitions will be open for viewing during these extended hours. Artists @ Work will take place on Aug. 9, and Sept. 13. Stump is an artist and arts educator living in San Diego. Meyer is a painter, photographer and author based in Los Angeles.

The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 4 p.m. Admission is $8, $5 for seniors and free for students and military. For more information, call (760) 435-3720 or visit oma-online.org.
