Skateboarders raise funds for troops

OCEANSIDE — More than two dozen skateboard riders gathered at Buccaneer Park to ride and raise money for the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund on Nov. 13.
Skaters rode 20 miles down the coast to Torrey Pines State Beach to raise awareness and funds.
Some rode to support family and friends in the military, other joined in because they felt it was a good cause to support.
Derek Smith of Honey Skateboards spearheaded the idea. “We all love to skate, what better fundraiser?” Smith said.
Smith is a retired Marine who served two tours in Iraq. Smith said he wants to give back to the troops and also share the positive impact of skateboarding. The two-hour ride encouraged skaters to wear helmets and ride safely.
“When you come back from the military they only pay for so much,” Smith said. The Semper Fi Fund helps injured military with the costs of hospitalization, recovery, home modifications, transportation and specialized equipment.
Last year the event raised $1,500. “Anything we can raise will help,” Nick Norton of Honey Skateboards said.
