Sister City helps celebrate Arbor Day

CARLSBAD — To honor 25 years of friendship with Futtsu, Japan and Carlsbad, California, sister cities since 1988, two cherry tree plantings are planed by Carlsbad Sister City Ambassadors, during Arbor Week April 20 through April 26. Four “Pink Cloud” double-grafted cherry trees have been donated by the San Diego Japanese Friendship Garden Society for the two occasions.

At 9 a.m. April 23, the students and staff of La Costa Heights Elementary School will have a program, dedication and planting of a cherry tree near the front of their school at 3035 Levante St., to honor the special relationship the school has with Futtsu, Japan. This event is being hosted by the Carlsbad Sister City Ambassadors, and the “Green Team” and staff members of the schoolare presenting the program.

This relationship began in 2011 when the La Costa elementary school students donated their own money to help with the tsunami. The delegation of four students and their sponsor from Japan made their scheduled trip to Carlsbad shortly after the tsunami. At their farewell dinner here in Carlsbad surprise visitors from La Costa came to present $1,000 they had raised for the visitors to take back to help with damages in Futtsu.

In March of 2013, when four students and three adults came from Futtsu to Carlsbad they wanted to visit the La Costa school to thank the students, to tell how their gift was used, and what it is like living in Futtsu now.

From 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. April 26 will be the Carlsbad Parks and Recreation Department’s annual Arbor Day event in Holiday Park, at Chestnut Street and Pio Pico. There will be exhibits, information about trees and their care, and the planting of trees.

From 11 a.m. to noon, April 26, three of the trees will be planted and dedicated in the courtyard adjacent to the Carlsbad City Council Chambers at 1200 Carlsbad Village Drive. Music by the Silk Wind Duo (koto and bamboo flute) will be included, hosted by the Carlsbad Sister City Ambassadors and the CSCA Junior Ambassadors.
