See Shakespeare with a twist

ENCINITAS — Tickets are available now as the theater department at San Dieguito Academy prepares its January presentation of classic theater, with an updated twist.Students from San Dieguito Academy present a 1980s-themed version of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” at 7 p.m. Jan. 11, Jan. 12 and Jan. 17 through Jan. 19 in the Clayton E. Liggett Theatre, on campus at 800 Santa Fe Drive. Tickets are $8 for students and $15 for adults and will be sold online at

Gods mix with mortals, a feuding king and queen unleash magical practical jokes on one another, spells yield improbable love affairs and a band of comical tradesmen wander into an enchanted wood and are transformed. But this version is set in the 1980s, and audiences will enjoy references to popular icons, music, movies and fashions of the time.
