Search continues for shoplifting, assault suspect

CARLSBAD — Two on-duty, plain clothes State of California law enforcement officers attempted to arrest a shoplifting suspect in front of the Vons located at 6951 El Camino Real in Carlsbad at 8 p.m. Aug. 13. The two officers were able to handcuff the suspect and notify the Carlsbad Police Department. The suspect then attacked the two state officers, causing serious injury to both officers. He fled the location, running behind the Vons wearing handcuffs. The two injured officers were treated and released at a local hospital.
The suspect was described as a Caucasian male, approximately 19 years old, between 5 feet 6 inches and 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighing approximately 150 pounds, with a tan complexion. The suspect might have sustained an injury to his nose during this incident.
Prior to the theft, the suspect was seen associating with a group of people in front of the Vons store. Any person who might have associated with this suspect or witnessed this incident is encouraged to call the Carlsbad Police Department at (760) 931-2197.
