SAN MARCOS — San Marcos Public Works Director Mike Mercereau will retire on Nov. 19 after 24 years of service. During his tenure, Mercereau served as assistant to the public works director, assistant public works director, facilities and property manager and finally as public works director. He was named director in November 1999. Mercereau has been involved in the development of the civic center, safety center, public works headquarters, Walnut Grove Park, Mission Sports Park, Jack’s Pond Park, Hollandia Park, Highway 78 on/off ramps and construction and maintenance of the city’s roadway and storm drain infrastructure.
“Aside from marriage to my beautiful wife Sherry and my two sons, Nathan and Christopher, my career with San Marcos has been the most rewarding experience of my life,” Mercereau said. “I can think of nothing more fulfilling than to work toward improving the community in which I have lived and worked.”
Mercereau plans for a second career that centers around resource conservation and alternate energy technologies. He will also continue his service to the local community by volunteering.
