San Marcos Fire Dept. Fill the Boot Drive on Aug. 13

SAN MARCOS — Dedicated San Marcos Local 4184 firefighters will participate in a fundraiser called” Fill the Boot” to benefit the local Muscular Dystrophy Association. They will volunteer their time to brave the heat to help San Diego MDA and Jerry’s Kids. Mike Vasile is a Firefighter Engineer for the San Marcos Fire Department. Mike’s brother Cole is living courageously with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. He’s always been Cole’s biggest supporter. Rather than asking why me and sitting back, Mike has taken things in his own hands. He organizes one of MDA’s biggest fill-the-boot drives. When it first started, there were a few firefighters that came out. Every single year, he does it and he does it with his heart. He educates everyone he touches, he touches everyone who listens. Now there are over 35 firefighters that come out to support him, Cole and the MDA at the boot drive. Each year they raise over $20,000 in one day. Mike sends out letters to the local businesses 2 months prior to the event, he goes to the restaurants in the area to ask for food donations for the guys. He goes above and beyond.

San Marcos firefighters will be in uniform at the Rancho Santa Fe Rd. & San Marcos Blvd intersections with their boots so that motorists may give their dollars and change to help firefighters in their support of MDA. MDA is a non-profit organization that helps children and adults who are affected by any of 43 neuromuscular diseases covered by MDA’s comprehensive medical services and research programs. MDA receives no government funding and charges no fees to those served by the Association therefore, MDA relies on private contributions, and fundraisers such as firefighter Fill the Boot to provide services.

MDA is proud to have a great partnership with San Marcos Fire Department. Please take a moment to drop some cash into a boot when you see your area firefighters out on the street.
