Resources and family fun at fair

OCEANSIDE — The Community Resource Fair at Joe Balderrama Park brought together local resources and a day of family fun on Oct. 16. “It’s just to let the residents know what’s available as far as resources,” Louie Chavez, resource manager for Chavez Resource Center, said. “It’s a fun day.”
Kids activities included rock climbing, inflatable jumpers and face painting. Resources ranged from health services to housing resources and job training. There was also a deejay and food booths.
Hundreds of area residents came together for information and fun. “Between 300 and 400 (people), we’re hoping that’s what we get,” Alice Lopez, Eastside United Community ActioN president, said.
Eastside United Community ActioN, or UCAN, sponsored the event along with Oceanside Neighborhood Services, Oceanside Community Safety Partnership and Eastside Neighborhood Association. The organizations work together as year-round resources for residents. “UCAN’s purpose is to help the community with education, recreation, and learning at Chavez Resource Center,” Lopez said. “It started with after-school programs.”
UCAN’s services have expanded to include community health and safety services. “It’s a resource for our neighbors, somewhere to come if they have any concerns,” Lopez said. “We can address them (their concerns) with the city police department or help with health services.”
