Residents urged to register cell phones for emergencies

COAST CITIES — In preparation for the upcoming fire season, residents are urged to register their cell phone numbers, Voice-over Internet phone numbers, and e-mail addresses to get emergency notifications.
San Diego County has a regional notification system that sends telephone notifications to residents and businesses within the county who are impacted by an emergency. This system, called AlertSanDiego, is used to notify homes and businesses at-risk with information on the event and requested action, such as evacuation. The system utilizes the region’s “reverse 9-1-1” system and is able to contact landline telephones whether listed or unlisted, including Time-Warner and Cox Cable phone numbers. If the AlertSanDiego notification call is picked up by an answering machine, the system will leave a voice message. If the telephone called is busy or does not answer, the system will redial that number up to three times in an attempt to deliver the message.
Because the system uses the “reverse 9-1-1” system, only landline numbers are in the system. Residents with a cell phone or voiceover Internet phone who would like to be notified over that device, or would also like an e-mail notification, must register those telephone numbers and e-mail addresses. In addition, users can register multiple locations that affect family members such as the address of an elderly relative or a child’s school.
