Racetrack rolls out music and festivals

DEL MAR — As the Del Mar racetrack season gallops into August, the Summer Concert Series heats up with reggae mainstay Steel Pulse Aug. 3 and the band Cake on Aug. 4. The second of four beer festivals at the track and the Western Regional Chili Cook-off also take place that same weekend, meaning this weekend at Del Mar will be a treat for all the senses.Steel Pulse will play at the post-race, “4 O’clock Friday” event. At the beer fest Aug. 4, beer fans can receive five tastings for $17 beginning at 1 p.m. Cake will add to the summer fun when they take the stage. Trumpet-driven melodies and John McCrea’s vocals will be on display in one of the biggest Summer Concert Series performances of 2012.

The Western Regional Chili Cook-off & Salsa contest will fill out the day Aug. 4. Guests to the track can receive free samples from chili and salsa chefs competing to take the People’s Choice category. Samples start at 1 p.m., so come to the track early and put your tongue to the test.

Racing at Del Mar happens Wednesdays through Sundays, with post time for the first race on most days at 2 p.m. On Fridays, first post is at 4 p.m. There will be a special Monday racing card on Labor Day, Sept. 3. For more information, call (858) 755-1141 or visit delmarscene.com.
