A plane crash occurred at 10:45 a.m. Jan. 24 in Oceanside on Mission Avenue at Highway 76. A single-engine Cessna 172 had just taken off from the Oceanside Municipal Airport and immediately crashed into a power pole and a raw sewage treatment plant. Oceanside police identified the pilot as Amandeep Singh, 24, and his passenger as Harshdeep Multani, 18. Singh and Multani were critically injured and had to be cut from the plane. Oceanside firefighters had to work in ankle-deep raw sewage as a result of the plane clipping a sewage valve at the treatment plant. Singh was trapped in the wreckage for almost an hour with severe trauma to his lower extremities. Both victims were transported to the hospital via Mercy Air. County Health officials were called in to help with cleanup of the sewage at the crash site. Oceanside Police and the NTSB are investigating the crash.
