RANCHO SANTA FE — An amazing 17 students earned perfect attendance honors for the 2011-12 school year at the June 7 school board meeting at R. Roger Rowe School.
One student, Jasmine Jaffe, has had perfect attendance seven years in a row.
“We take this opportunity once a year to recognize students who have been here every day when sometimes it is not an easy feat,” Superintendent Lindy Delaney said. “We do appreciate that you take school so seriously.”
Delaney said she was out one day during the year because of sickness, so the honored students had outdone her.
“You show you are dedicated every single day,” Delaney said. “We honor you today for your dedication to your education, your community and school, impressing on them that you care.”
The students then walked to the front of the performing arts center, shook hands with school officials and received a certificate.
Honored kindergartners were Nylah King-Boyd and Brianna Rodriquez. First-graders earning the awards were Rohan Desal, Maya Kenyon, Branden Recendiz, Darin Shahri and Cooper Vick.
Third-grader Isaac Lustig and fourth-grader Aaron Lustig earned the award along with sixth-graders Blake Fuller, Jasmine Jaffe, Hana Lustig and Alexandra Macia. Seventh-graders Gillian Chaffer and Madison Klair had perfect attendance, as did Romteen Sedighi and Nicole Serratos from the eighth grade.
Jasmine Jaffe earned a special round of applause.
The are four Lustig children at the school, but Adam missed one day of school, when he fell down, split his head and had to be at the emergency room at 8 a.m. on that school day, said his father Michael Lustig.
“If it wasn’t for that, Adam would have been here too,” Lustig said.
After bestowing the honors on the students, the board moved on to other district business including approving the budget for next year, which is a challenge with dropping property taxes and support from the state, whose budget has not yet been finalized.
“It’s hard not knowing what the state is doing,” said Jim Depolo, board president.
Finance Director Denise Stevenson agreed.
“It’s a moving target. How can you plan when you don’t know what your revenues are going to be?” Stevenson said.
Also at the meeting, Assistant Superintendent Cindy Schaub and Technology Director Ben Holbert gave the board an update on the roll out of new technology for next year.
Schaub said the project is on schedule with purchasing iPads, digital content and teacher applications and putting the devices into the hands of teachers.
This summer, school officials will be preparing student devices and instructing teachers how to use them.
In the fall, the devices will be distributed to middle school grades.
It was announced that graduation will be at 6 p.m. June 14 at the Rancho Santa Fe Garden Club.
