OCEANSIDE — Harry Cummings, a 61-year-old Oceanside resident, died of injuries suffered when he was struck while crossing Mission Avenue Dec. 15.
Cummings was struck at 5:20 p.m. in the 3500 block of Mission Avenue. Responding police and fire department personnel responded and treated the victim at the scene, and then transported him to the Oceanside Airport, where he was flown by air ambulance to Scripps – La Jolla Medical Center. The victim died shortly after arriving at the hospital.
Oceanside Police Department’s Traffic Services Unit responded to the scene and handled the investigation. Preliminary investigation indicates that Cummings was jaywalking northbound across Mission Avenue. He reached the center median and appeared to see the westbound vehicle, but decided to cross in front of the vehicle. The driver, a 39-year-old Escondido resident swerved, but was unable to avoid Cummings, striking him with the front of the car. Witnesses reported that the vehicle was traveling at or near the posted speed limit.
