CARLSBAD — A 35-year-old man accused of pulling a hunting knife on a person on Carlsbad Boulevard was arraigned Oct. 23 on charges relating to the incident.
Tony Castro is charged with a single count each of assault with a deadly weapon, and brandishing a deadly weapon, both felonies, as well as one misdemeanor count each of resisting arrest and providing a false name to police stemming from an incident Oct. 16 with a 62-year-old Carlsbad man.
Superior Court Judge Marshall Hockett set Castro’s bail at $50,000; however, he posted bail following the hearing. The judge set a Nov. 6 preliminary hearing.
Castro, who was on parole at the time of the incident, approached the victim around 9 p.m. on a sidewalk in the 2500 block of Carlsbad Boulevard, police said. Getting within two to three feet of the victim while holding the fixed-blade hunting knife in a threatening manner, Castro told the man he was going to kill him, but then fled the scene.
Five days later on the afternoon of Oct. 21, police found Castro in the bushes two blocks from the scene of the incident. Castro tried to evade police, but was apprehended more than a half-a-mile away on the beach near Cassidy Street in Oceanside.
