North County students provide art for Young Art 2009: Expressing Literature

SAN DIEGO — Young Art, the San Diego Museum of Art’s biennial exhibition of local student creativity, “Young Art 2009: Expressing Literature” returns this year with more than 150 artworks on view at the Museum April 18 through May 31, San Diego Museum of Art, 1450 El Prado, Balboa Park.
Area students submitting art to the event are from Solana Vista Elementary, Capri Elementary, Montessori Arts and Sciences School, Pacific Ridge, Saint Patrick Parish School, Roger R. Rowe Elementary, Santa Fe Christian, Rhoades School and Solana Santa Fe Elementary.
The show features art inspired by literary works created by kindergarten through 12th-grade students from San Diego city and county schools.
“SDMA has celebrated the achievements of San Diego students with exhibitions like Young Art virtually since the Museum’s founding in 1926,” said Derrick R. Cartwright, SDMA’s executive director. “Regional awareness of our children’s art education is greatly influenced by the exhibition.”
To expose a greater number of people to Young Art and provide more children the opportunity to participate, an additional 150 works will be on display at nearly 10 San Diego public library branches.
“Young Art is just one way the museum partners with local schools to promote and facilitate student enjoyment of visual culture,” Cartwright said. “SDMA has a longstanding commitment to support art education in San Diego schools by offering free tours for learners of all ages, and creating programs, workshops, open houses and lesson plans for teachers.”
Tours of the exhibition — led by middle and high school students whose work is featured in Young Art — will be available May 10 and May 17 at 3 p.m. Visitors can also learn how the exhibition came together by joining Young Art coordinator Amy Briere for a Gallery Talk at 4 p.m. April 30 or May 3.
In addition to the exhibit, SDMA will offer creative activities for the entire family. A series of public programs connecting literature with visual and performing arts will be available, and several literature-inspired works from the SDMA permanent collection and rare books from the SDMA Library will be on view in the exhibition.
