CARLSBAD — Tiburones United Football Club have joined as the newest expansion side of the National Premier Soccer League for the 2012 season.
The club will be North County San Diego’s first and only men’s professional soccer team, which will represent local talent from Escondido, San Marcos, Vista, Oceanside, Carlsbad, Del Mar, San Diego, Chula Vista, El Cajon, and Tijuana, Mexico.
The Torres brothers under the name Tiburones Rojos De Veracruz founded TUFC in 1986. The Tiburones have won eight titles in various divisions and leagues within the San Diego amateur circuit. Several players from previous squads (1986-2008) were offered pro contracts in Mexico, and in one year TUFC has already had two players discovered by U.S.-based professional soccer teams. Currently TUFC is playing in the Carlsbad Men’s Soccer League and has four, soon to be eight, teams participating in the youth division.
“Our vision is to educate young players on what it takes to become a pro soccer player and to give them the opportunity of a lifetime. We are very happy about being announced as the newest expansion franchise of the National Premier Soccer League for 2012,” said Martin Torres, head coach and president of TUFC.
The Tiburones are the second San Diego-based club to participate in the NPSL, and will join the existing club San Diego Boca in the Northwest Division. The other teams in the NPSL Northwestern Conference are: Sacramento Gold, Real San Jose, Sonoma County Sol, Bay Area Ambassadors, Southern Oregon Fuego and San Diego Boca. TUFC will play will play home and away fixtures with each divisional team.
The NPSL is the successor of the Men’s Premier Soccer League which formed in 2002. In 2005, the league had been recreated into an expanded national league to accommodate teams from the Midwestern region, and in 2007 a Northeastern Region was added.
In 2008, the National Premier Soccer League has become truly a national league with the addition of a Southeastern region. The NPSL is sanctioned by the United States Adult Soccer Association as an affiliate of the United States Soccer Federation, the ruling body for soccer in the United States and FIFA the world’s ruling body for soccer.
