Movies offer triple look into the heart of surfing

ENCINITAS — Surfers are invited to the Sacred Craft Consumer Surfboard Expo on Oct. 11 and Oct. 12 and will be treated to three brand new surf movies.
Admission to the event, opening at 10 a.m. both days at Del Mar Fairgrounds Wyland Exhibit Hall, is $5 and children under 16 are free.
A new event at the expo is the screening of three films — Cyrus Sutton’s “Under The Sun,” which contrasts two surf cities on the east coast of Australia; Duncan and Malcolm Campbell’s surfboard design opus “Bonzer: The Mothership” and PureFrustrationProductions’ “Between The Lines,” a film that looks at the surfer’s dilemma during the Vietnam War. The films will screen for free with the cost of admission to the expo.
The tentative viewing schedule will be:
— Oct. 11 at 10:30 a.m., 1:45 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. — “Bonzer: The Mothership,” at 11 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. “Under The Sun” and at 2:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 5 p.m., “Between The Lines.”
— Oct. 12 at 10:30 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. “Bonzer: The Mothership,” at 11 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. “Between The Lines,” and at 12:15 p.m. “Under The Sun.”
The theme of the expo is that nothing has defined the surfing experience more than that on which surfers ride the waves. Nothing defines the surfer more than his or her surfboard and consequently, the surfboard has become a philosophical icon, a sacred craft, a culturally pervasive symbol of freedom, adventure and enduring youth.
“We wanted to add a new twist to this year’s expo,” John O’Connell, events liaison, said. “With so many great surf documentaries out there, we feel that bringing some of them into the mix makes a lot of sense. We’re confident the surfers attending the expo will agree.”
“We are extremely stoked to be showing our film along with these other fine films,” Ty Ponder, executive producer of “Between The Lines,” said. “The three together make for a great mix of subject matter.”
