Olivia DeRoche, in grade 4 at Sage Canyon Elementary School in Carmel Valley, with her mother Katrina DeRoche, and Olivenhain Pioneer sixth-grader Evan Reider, with mom Heather Reider, took first place in their divisions in honoring their mothers in the San Diego’s 50 Best Moms essay contest. The contest, hosted by Time Warner, asked youngsters, “Why do you think your mom is one of San Diego’s 50 Best?” More than 3,000 entries were received and the finalists, with their moms, received kudos at a luncheon May 9 at the Hyatt La Jolla at Aventine. Winning students’ teachers receive a $250 gift card for supplies for their classrooms, plus a $50 gift card to Anthony’s Fish Grotto. The Best Mom finalists walked down a red carpet as an excerpt from the essay was read. Courtesy photos
