Poodles Lucy (right) and Ethel (left) were marked for euthanasia at the El Centro shelter until Rancho Coastal Humane Society came to the rescue and transferred them to Encinitas through their Second Chance program. RCHS stipulated that the girls could only be adopted as a pair. Lisa Risser (left) and Leslie Berry (right) of Solana Beach first saw the dogs on the RCHS website and adopted them Aug. 29. “We named them Lucy and Ethel because they were best of friends who stood by each other through thick and thin,” Risser said. “Lucy is the more mischievous and playful of the two. Ethel loves the comfort of her home, and is very affectionate.” Photo by Lillian Cox
