CARLSBAD —Fans seeking to get a behind-the-scenes view of the inaugural LPGA Classic should consider serving as a tournament volunteer. Positions are available on many different volunteer committees for the tournament to be held March 22 through March 28 at La Costa Resort and Spa.
The LPGA Classic presented by J Golf will need up to 600 volunteers. Volunteer efforts are critical to the operation of the tournament and allow it to donate significant funds to local charities.
Prospective volunteers can register and find descriptions of all available volunteer committees via the tournament’s official Web site, www.lpgalacosta.com, or by calling tournament coordinator Danielle Genet in the tournament office at (760) 579-7365.
“We appreciate the vital work that the volunteers will provide to our event,” said Jim Felechner, tournament director for the event. “In my years of event management, I have seen how much enjoyment and satisfaction our volunteers receive from getting involved. They see the tournament from a completely different vantage point than the average fan does.”
The $1.7 million LPGA Classic will be a full-field, 144-player event that is expected to include Mexican superstar and Rolex Rankings No. 1 Lorena Ochoa, Louise Suggs, Rolex Rookie of the Year Jiyai Shin, American No. 1 Cristie Kerr and young American stars Michelle Wie, Paula Creamer, Natalie Gulbis, Morgan Pressel and Brittany Lincicome.
Volunteers are required to work a minimum of three days (four to five hour shifts each) during tournament week. The volunteer package costs $50 per person, but is valued at more than $300. Volunteers will receive:
— One round of golf at La Costa Resort & Spa (minimum of four volunteer shifts required for this benefit)
— Two Weekly Grounds Passes – for family and friends
— One weekly volunteer badge – provides grounds access throughout tournament week for all time when not scheduled to volunteer
— Official tournament golf shirt
— Official tournament hat or visor
— One lunch voucher for each day worked
— Official tournament pin
— Official tournament lanyard
— Official tournament drawstring bag
— Extra tournament golf shirts will be available for purchase at $30 each, and official tournament wind jackets will be available for purchase at $45 each.
Volunteer positions are available on the following committees: admissions/will call; scoring control; marshals; greens reporters; information/greeters; merchandise; on-course services; partner hosts; pro-am registration; scoring tents; standard bearers; tournament office; transportation; walking scorers; and volunteer services.
