Library hosts clarinet quartet

CARMEL VALLEY —January’s free family music program sponsored by the Friends of the Carmel Valley Library will be presented at 7 p.m. Jan. 13 in the library’s community room, 3919 Townsgate Drive.
This first event of the new year will feature the San Diego Clarinet Quartet in a program of music by J. S. Bach, W. A. Mozart, John Williams, George Gershwin and others. The quartet is composed of clarinetists Jonathan Crick, Mark Margolies, Jim Reed and Richard Robinette. The program will last 45 minutes.
Crick holds a Master’s degree in music from San Diego State and was given the Outstanding Music Major and Outstanding Orchestra Member awards in his senior year. Since 1965 he has performed with numerous ensembles in San Diego including a Japanese music quartet in which he plays the shakuhachi, a Japanese flute.
Margolies recently moved to San Diego from Boston where he spent the last 20 years playing clarinet and other woodwinds in orchestras, chamber groups, theaters and other venues. He taught clarinet at Boston College and woodwinds at Brookline Music School.
Reed is a retired engineer who now spends most of his time with music. He plays with the Coastal Communities Concert Band and several local ensembles, teaches music, and promotes music education in San Diego County.
Robinette has been in the San Diego area since 1953. He graduated with distinction in clarinet performance from San Diego State, taught music at the high school level for seven years, and is professor emeritus from Southwestern College where he lectured, performed, and conducted.
