RE: Demonstration of quieter wayside train horn

I was shocked and amazed to hear that candidate Kristin Gaspar (at Encinitas City Council meeting on Aug. 18) is taking credit for the Wayside Horn Demonstration scheduled for Aug. 24.
Councilwoman Teresa Barth has worked for years with the community to find solutions for better pedestrian access across the railroad tracks and to find ways to reduce the noise impacts along the rail corridor. She has encouraged the community of Leucadia especially that there is a way to cross the tracks safely.
At the April 21, 2010, meeting Barth reported on an upcoming wayside horn demonstration that she would be attending in Del Mar and also noted at the April 28 meeting that she had spoken to the company representative about holding a similar demonstration in Encinitas.
Gaspar’s self-congratulatory comments were disingenuous at best. She misrepresented not only her knowledge and background on the subject but also tried to take credit for the work of Councilwoman Barth. Is Gaspar the kind of council member we want representing us?

Rachelle beat me to it. I think this young woman’s tactics are pathetic. That’s the second time she got up and spoke on the pretense she was bringing a new idea of wayside horns before the council. Had Gaspar merely acknowledged her own opinions were shared by others in this activist Encinitas community and by Barth, she might have capitalized on a network of informed citizens and engaged them. Instead, Gaspar seems to be following her mentors currently in the council majority – whatever works to be recognized in order to win – substance and ethics be damned.

Dear Shelia,
Your candidate took credit for someone else’s work.
As for the biofuel coastal cruiser project, I applaud Barth’s effort. It would be advantageous to have more forward thinking people explore responsible transportation alternatives rather than concepts like explanding hwy 5 lanes to 18 lanes and taking citizen’s homes away from them. I applaud her efforts and she had the support of the community. No throat forcing down here.
Thanks for your opinion, Rachelle. I agree.

I agree with the facts that Rachelle is offering.
Election craziness has begun and pointing out Barth’s efforts is appropriate. It is misleading for a candidate to take credit for the efforts and accomplments of their rival.
That is not ‘classy’.
Thank you Rachelle for bringing attention to this inpropriety.

Rachelle; please stay classy!
Don’t demean yourself in print this way.
Remember, anything is possible if we don’t care who gets the credit.
If you are going to be published in The Coast News every week; perhaps you should write a column; because what you are writing is opinion, not reporting.
If you are going to work as a flak for a candidate; then please explain all the City money that was spent by your candidate on the ridiculous vegetable-oil trolley last year that she forced down the City and Leucadia 101’s throat.
Isn’t it enough that Teresa has her own father, Bill Arballo acting as her mouthpiece each week?
