Legoland announces hotel plans

CARLSBAD — A recent press conference was held at Legoland to officially announce it would break ground in October for its new Legoland Hotel. Scheduled to open in the summer of 2013, it will be the first one of its kind in the United States. Peter Ronchetti,
general manager of Legoland California Resort, shared the news with the crowd.
The three-story hotel will be located on the right hand side of the Legoland entrance. Currently, buses park in this spot. But not too far off in the distance future it will be where families can spend the night and enjoy the numerous Legoland sites.
The hotel will house 250 rooms which plan to boast a colorful Lego theme. A family-friendly restaurant and pool area are also in the blueprints.
“Legoland Hotel will be unique in many ways,” said Julie Estrada, media relation specialist at Legoland. “But mostly, because of the immersive Lego based environment that guests will be able to experience year round such as shows, interactive activities and décor, that all reinforces it as a complete Legoland experience.”
Carlsbad Mayor Pro Tem Ann Kulchin was also there to take part in the press conference. She first took a ride inside the Legoland California’s “Brick Mobile” which towed a colorful queen-sized bed that symbolized the upcoming hotel.
“Carlsbad has the reputation of being family-oriented and this is the piece of the puzzle that really needs to be here,” Kulchin said.
Following Kulchin’s brief speech, roughly 28,000 thousand multi-colored Duplo bricks cascaded from a front loader onto the bed.
Kids from the Boys and Girls Clubs of Carlsbad sporting their pajamas cheered at the site before them, which represented the “Bed and Brick” future at Legoland.
In 2009, the city of Carlsbad Planning Commission approved Legoland California Resort’s hotel request. Considering many factors, which included the economic recovery, Ronchetti said a perfect opening date for their hotel was finally decided. Ronchetti said it will offer guests the “next” level of the Legoland experience.
Legoland California opened its doors in 1999 and sits on 128 acres. It employs roughly 1,800 employees but that number does fluctuate depending on the time of year.
Currently, there are two other international Legoland hotels. One is located in the United Kingdom, and the other is in Billund, Denmark. Legoland Billund is home to the first Legoland Park established back in 1968.
Every facet of the new Legoland hotel in Carlsbad will consider the needs of families. Like Legoland California and the Sea Life Carlsbad Aquarium, Julie Estrada said the hotel will be designed for families with young children and will feature rooms and suites themed after the most popular Legoland areas.
Also on the resort property are the Sheraton Carlsbad Resort and Spa and Grand Pacific Palisades. Now, the Legoland Hotel will join this duo.
Estrada describes their communication with the city of Carlsbad as both positive and supportive regarding their newest venture.
“We will continue to work with them (city of Carlsbad) to make Legoland Hotel a great success,” she said.
