Know the right number to call for police assistance

CARMEL VALLEY — Community Relations Officer Gaylon Sells of the San Diego Police Department wants to make sure everyone knows the proper numbers to call when they need to have an officer dispatched or several other law enforcement issues.
Rather than dialing 911, the proper number to call to have an officer dispatched to investigate an incident is (858) 484-3154. This will connect you to SDPD’s Communications Dispatch. The 911 number is for life-threatening emergencies, or if you see someone with a weapon or a crime in progress.
The SDPD nonemergency number is (619) 531-2000 or (858) 484-3154 for San Diego Police Department Communications and operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
To report a crime, a person you suspect of “casing” cars or homes, cars drag racing past your home after curfew and similar incidents, call (858) 523-7000.
The Retired Senior Volunteer Patrol operates from 8 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday at (858) 523-7021.
To report an abandoned vehicle or a car parked on a street over 72 hours, call (858) 495-7856. You will need the license plate number, location (street and block number) and description of the vehicle.
Use (888) 382-1222 to file a complaint about the “Do Not Call” Registry to stop most calls from telemarketers. If a charity calls, the police department recommends that you do not even talk to them and tell them, “The policy of our house is to never give money to anyone who telephones us.”
For poison control 24 hours a day, seven days, call (800) 222-1222.
Officer Sells can be reached by voice mail 24 hours a day, seven days a week at (858) 523-7031.
The Northwestern Division San Diego Police Department is located at 12592 El Camino Real in Carmel Valley and is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
