Investigation of suspicious New Year’s Day death continues

OCEANSIDE — There are still questions surrounding a suspicious death that occurred on New Year’s Day.

A white man, approximately 40 years old, was found with injuries to his face and the back of his head lying in the bike path on South Coast Highway at 8:40 p.m. on Jan. 1.

The man was taken by paramedics to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

More than a week has passed and it has not been determined how the man sustained blunt force trauma injuries and a skull fracture.

“It’s unknown if it’s from a fall, a hit or a fall and hit,” Lt. Leonard Cosby said.

Cosby added it is also unknown how or why the man was at the stretch of bike path by the lagoon.

“There were no witnesses, and we have no idea what he was doing,” Cosby said.

The man’s identity has not been confirmed.

Further updates on the incident are not being released due to the ongoing investigation.

To date no witnesses have come forward, and no surveillance videos of the area have been reviewed. Cosby said public bus video might be requested to help shed light on what occurred. The police department is asking anyone with information on the incident to call Detective Wallace at (760) 435-4892.
