As thousands gathered around the county on Memorial Day to remember the soldiers and veterans who have sacrificed their lives, hundreds gathered on the shores of a Carlsbad lagoon to pay tribute to Emery Kauanui, a local surfer who died two years ago following an altercation in front of his La Jolla home.
More than 1,100 people turned out to mingle and remember loved ones at the event held on the shores of Agua Hedionda Lagoon, while being entertained by bands such as the Dakota Motor Company and sporting demonstrations on and off the water.
Caeb Aero, Kauanui’s older brother, marked the event by spraypainting his brother at a Memorial Day event on the shores of Agua Hedionda Lagoon in Carlsbad. His brother, Emery Kauanui was killed on Memorial Day weekend two years after a fight following an incident at a La Jolla restaurant.
