Hammer takes top spot in tournament

COAST CITIES — The San Diego Hammer varsity wheelchair basketball team was crowned champion for the second straight year after winning the West Coast Regional Tournament on Jan. 11 at Canyon Crest Academy.
The Hammer won the championship game with a 61-28 win against the Rancho Renegades of Los Angeles, following a win over the No. 1 ranked Minnesota Timberwolves Jan. 10. It was the first win by the Hammer in 10 attempts against the team from Minnesota. The Rancho Renegades earned the right to play the Hammer in the finals with a win against Minnesota Jan. 11.
The Hammer was undefeated in the round-robin tournament. This championship places the Hammer in the 16-team Varsity Nationals at Denver in March.
The Hammer offense was led by their two college-bound standout players, Matt Golembeski, selected Most Valuable Player of the tournament, and Aaron Patterson, named the best Offensive Player for the 70-58 victory over Minnesota, and, in the final against the Renegades.
The tournament was hosted by Canyon Crest Academy and sponsored by the Del Mar-Solana Beach Sunrise Rotary Club and the Canyon Crest Academy Interact Club in conjunction with the San Diego Adaptive Sports Foundation. Tournament supporting sponsors contributed funds that will be shared by the San Diego Adaptive Sports Foundation, the Canyon Crest Academy Interact Club and the Canyon Crest Foundation.
