CARLSBAD — Although the count took longer than expected, it appears Mayor Matt Hall will serve a third term.
The San Diego County Registrar of Voters’ latest release on the afternoon of Nov. 7 showed Hall with a 57-43 lead over challenger Councilwoman Cori Schumacher with 100 percent of precincts reporting.
Still, there are 490,000 outstanding ballots, according to the county, and Hall believes between 10,000 to 12,000 are from Carlsbad. He was first elected mayor in 2010 after serving on the City Council since 1994.
“This was a great race and I felt the community was fully engaged and excited about the outcome,” Hall said. “First, I hope the city can come back together and focus on the future of the city and all of us being able to work together in creating the next vision for Carlsbad.”
As for Schumacher, she conceded knowing it would take more than 8,000 votes of the remaining balance to tip the scales in her favor.
“I am proud of how our campaign consistently chose to take the high road in this campaign,” she said. “We faced a significant challenge with the infusion of funds from developers and hoteliers, and ultimately, the people of Carlsbad chose to stay the course with the current leadership. I have reached out to Mr. Hall with my congratulations.”
The two have battled in a spirited campaign over the past several months, each presenting their own visions for the future of the city.
Hall relied on consistent leadership, financial stability and Carlsbad being one of the most respected, efficient and profitable cities in the state.
The night started with Hall jumping out to a 3,000-vote lead, which kept growing as the results trickled in.
“I didn’t have any concerns about myself, but had concerns for other candidates,” Hall said.
Schumacher, meanwhile, hammered Hall on the 2016 Measure A debacle, while including more green and clean tech jobs as the future. One of her big priorities was to research and invest in solar energy and battery farms as a way to move the city away from development fees as one of its primary revenue streams.
Schumacher said what resonates with her supporters is the commitment to transparency in local government and to avoid reliance on tourism and being a luxury resort city.
“Our campaign was focused on increasing the representation of our community on council,” she added. “I stepped aside in District 1 in order for another voice to rise and I am pleased to see the support for Barbara Hamilton in my district. I look forward to getting back to work for the people of Carlsbad.”
Schumacher was in a similar position in 2016, when she trailed after the early releases to then-incumbent Lorraine Wood for City Council. Schumacher pulled away to win by 700 votes, but this year couldn’t muster a rally to overcome a larger deficit.

Cori has class, intelligence, integrity, honor, and mostly patience. Just wait. Hall has…lot of money behind him and lots of sycophantic supporters incapable of rational thought. Their only game is spreading lies to incite fear. Let’s see how long that game can last.

You got that right. I guess some people don’t care that politicians can be bought and that they can pay consultants to help them spread their lies. Eventually the people of Carlsbad will wake up. They’re just a little slow…and some are slower than others.
Best mayor developer money can buy. I’m sure Hall will be happy to do their bidding so they can get a good return on their investment.

Cori’s side lost. Resoundingly. By a decisive margin. McInerny’s railing at the use of “You aliases” is ironic when we look at the endless rantings of online surrogates Corinne’s team had. Remember”Addie” and ‘the Commish.”? A failure to accept the will of the voters is what is “sad.” Many people such as the leaders of Citizens for North County, opposed Caruso and had deep concerns about Corinne Schumacher. The battery farm delusion in combination with Cori’s plans for spending and raising revenues would deplete the City’s reserves. Even though she has offered very few specific economic plans, what little she has said is enough to know that a Mayor Schumacher would have been very bad for the local economy.
You might say, wait, wait, wait, isn’t Cori’s foundation a huge success? Doesn’t she know what he’s talking about? No, it wasn’t and no she doesn’t. The “King of Carlsbad” is far from the first to conclude that Ms. Schumacher lacked the temperament to be mayor. After all, this is an individual who laces her speeches with narcissistic references to surfing success and heaping doses of demagoguery. She’s not of the temperament of the kind of stable, thoughtful person we need as a mayor.
Ms. Schumacher and her core supporters attempted to channel anger over Measure A for less than noble purposes. They created scapegoats of all those who disagreed just once with their agenda. everyone who has ever dissented has been branded as corrupt or divisive. Like any community, Carlsbad has some serious issues to face, and we need serious leaders. Whatever your concerns are the “Coricrats” are not the least bit interested in addressing them. They are interested in one thing only. That is telling you who to blame. It’s a good thing for Carlsbad Cori did not quite make it on Tuesday, and her fifteen minutes are up.

I am not the Commish. But you keep believing it if it makes you feel better. Enjoy your self-congratulatory ranting but remember Hall is ONLY one of 5. When the tide finally turns and people wake up to what is going on, he’s not going to enjoy being on the other end of those 4-1 votes and all of Tim Stripe’s money ain’t gonna fix that. We know why it was so critical that Hall got willing accomplices like Carmichael and that sorry excuse Busta to run and why the same money backed their lame campaigns.

A great mayor does not bring in high density, low income housing. A great mayor doesn’t vote against license plate readers. A great mayor doesn’t read from a laundry list of left wing grievances. The left wing Cori crowd overplayed their hand. The obnoxious belief that everyone that doesn’t fall into line is obviously a crook is beyond childish. Relieved above made some great points. Always seemed to be a battle between adults and the left wing grievance crowd that are lucky to have a few coins to rub together. The adults remain in charge.
San day for Carlsbad residents. Matt Hall means same old stale status quo – he’s not a leader, he’s not cutting edge, and he only follows his own personal agendas and couldn’t care less about the will of the people… Cori would have been a great mayor; again, sad day for Carlsbad.
Carlsbad dodged a bullet last night. The divisive, empty, self-serving, and narcissistic agenda of Cori Schumacher was resoundingly defeated last evening. She deserved to be repudiated by the voters. The excesses of her core backers including those posting on here prior to the election contributed mightily to her loss. The voters are usually more intelligent than we give them credit for. The vast majority do not care about the troubles of people who knowingly bought property near an airport. They do not consider it the end of the world that people living in seven-figure Ponto homes do not have a park to go along with their short walk to the beaches and the Pacific Ocean. And many do not care about hearing of the Barrio residents continued laundry list of grievances. That does not equate to indifference either. It is a function of the fatigue that ultimately sets in when a few people and their drama sucks all life out of a reasoned discussion of issues and civic needs. The result last night was a victory for moderation, for rationality, and civility in our community. Thank God.
Clearly “Relieved” here is neither moderate or civil. Many moderate people thought anyone should be on council longer before being mayor – try later after a full term. Other moderate people say Cori has a vote for the next two years already.Why put the city through an expensive election for a vacated seat ? Or a heated appointment process? Thoughts like these by rational people are not the “repudiation” that “relieved” so desperately seeks as he insults multiple neighborhoods throughout all 4 council districts. No good comes out of that attitude towards other people in Carlsbad . Especially that bit about the airport- which is clearly going to affect the whole region. Also wonder why he needs to mentions laundry lists in several posts – “Relieved+Very Relieved” = a lot of dirty laundry …
Glad to see some sanity restored to Carlsbad. The recent uprising and barking by a few, noisy left wingers was certainly irritating. Hopefully we can now settle down and focus on smart development. We don’t want high density, low income housing.
