Golden masters hit the waves for Senior Olympics of Surfing

OCEANSIDE — Golden masters and surfing legends hit the waves off Oceanside Pier for the first Senior Olympics of Surfing on Oct. 9.
Surfing is usually seen as a youth sport, but event competitors were ready to have the spotlight on their skills for a day.
“Most of us have surfed for quite a long time,” John Reinhardt, former professional surfer and event commissioner, said. “We want some attention pointed our way,” he joked.
The Senior Olympics of Surfing drew lifelong surfers and newcomers to compete. Among the challengers were former members of the first MiraCosta College surf team and former professional surfers.
In addition to longboard and short board age group competitions, there was live music, hula dancing, sports related vendors, a VIP seating area, and massages.
The event is part of the national Senior Olympics competitions that challenge athletes 50 and older to test their skills in 29 different sports.
“We encourage them to stay active and healthy,” Daniel Propp, San Diego Senior Olympics executive director, said.
In the 24 years that the Senior Olympics games have been held seniors have gotten more active and additional sports continue to be added.
This year surfing was included in the San Diego region games.
“It gives a lot of camaraderie and friendships,” Propp said. “Fifty percent of senior don’t get active until after they retire.”
