Give your lawn a landscape retrofit

ENCINITAS — The San Diego County Water Authority is again teaming up with the San Diego Botanic Garden and MiraCosta College to sponsor a series of classes on WaterSmart Landscape Makeovers beginning Sept. 15.The classes, to be held at the San Diego Botanic Garden, 230 Quail Gardens Drive, are free and are designed to teach participants the three necessary steps for turf removal and a successful landscape retrofit to more water-efficient landscaping.

Information and application can be found online at sdbgarden.org/classes.htm. Applicants should submit paperwork Aug. 25 to [email protected] or fax to (760) 632-0917. Space is limited, and the class will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Eligible parties must meet the following criteria to apply:

1. Be a single-family residential homeowner (owner-occupied)

2. Possess working, in-ground irrigation system with a controller (timer)

3. Commit and have financial ability to make over at least one irrigated section of turf to low-water-use plants

4. Commit to attend all three workshops and two 45-minute coaching sessions

5. Have email address, Internet access and access to a camera (digital preferred)

Classes are as follows:

1. Sept. 15, 9 a.m. to noon, Site analysis and turf removal

2. Sept. 29, 9 a.m. to noon, Planning, plant selection and design

3. Oct. 13, (time TBD), Design Coaching Session 1 (your plant plan)

4. Nov. 3, 9 a.m. to noon, Smart irrigation system components and installation

5. Nov. 17, (time TBD), Design Coaching Session 2 (your plant plan)
