Getting inside Bach cantatas

RANCHO SANTA FE — Conductor Rick Westerfield launches the new “Pacific Bach Project: Awake! Rouse the Dawn,” at 7 p.m. April 13, at The Village Church, 6225 Paseo Delicias. The program provides real-time commentary that takes the audience inside the music while vocalists and instrumentalists perform Bach’s works in a church setting. A reception follows the performance.The Pacific Bach Project brings together baroque musicians and professional vocalists from across the country to present stylistically informed performances of Bach along with real-time commentary that makes the music accessible to everyone. The ensemble is led by Westerfield, former assistant conductor of both the Boston Symphony and the New York Philharmonic.

Tickets are available now for the Bach cantatas inspired by psalms. The event will feature the debut of the region’s newest period instrument orchestra and choir, led by Westerfield. Tickets are $25 to $50 and $10 for students at Pacificbach.com or (800) 838-3006.

The program includes music from cantatas BWV 190 “Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied” (“Sing to the Lord a New Song”), BWV 112 “Der Herr ist mein getreuer Hirt” (“The Lord is My True Shepherd”), and BWV 17 “Wer Dank opfert, der preiset mich” (“Whosoever Offers Thanks, Praises Me”).
