Gang member charged in C’bad party shooting

CARLSBAD — A reputed gang member is looking at nearly three decades behind bars after he allegedly shot a teen outside a Carlsbad house party two weeks ago.
Raul Sepeda Gonzalez, 20, appeared in a Vista courtroom Feb. 25 to face charges of attempted murder and assault with a semi-automatic firearm. Both counts carry additional gang and weapon allegations.
At the request of prosecutors, Judge Marshall Hockett set Gonzalez’s bail at $1 million; however, a no bail hold is in place since Gonzalez was on probation at the time of his arrest.
Gonzalez pleaded not guilty to the charges and allegations. His next scheduled court appearance is a March 9 readiness conference.
In the early morning hours of Feb. 21, an 18-year-old male suffered nonlife-threatening injuries after being shot in the head outside of a party in the 2300 block of Pio Pico, police said.
Because of the ongoing investigation in the case, Deputy District Attorney Geoff Allard said he couldn’t release the victim’s name, medical condition or whether he had any gang ties.
After witnesses identified Gonzalez as the shooter, police arrested him late in the evening Feb. 22 during a traffic stop on southbound Interstate 5 near Cannon Road, authorities said.
During his bail request, Allard told the judge Gonzalez has been involved in four violent offenses, including the shooting, over the last two years. In 2006, Gonzalez was involved in a group beatdown and a Carlsbad robbery, the prosecutor told the court. Then in 2007, he and another man assaulted the victim of the aforementioned robbery outside of Carlsbad High School. Allard told the judge these offenses show Gonzalez is “out of control.”
Gonzalez received a six-month jail sentence after he pleaded guilty to one count of assault stemming from the attack on the robbery victim.

In reading this article I am distressed in the use of the term Semi-automatic Pistol. The writer should have called it a pistol or a hand gun and not demonized the attack any more then it was!! All Pistols are semi-automatic’s!!
A “Machine Pistol” has the ability to discharge a multiple number of shots with only one pull of the trigger. The public never hears of this because their use is extremely rare! These guns costing in the thousands of dollars. As a fact the police carry semi-automatic weapons as their standard side arm. As does our sons and daughters in the military. As do most civilian Canceled Carry Weapons permit holders in San Diego. And the largest number of handguns in the home are semi-automatic pistols !!
OK, What is an “Semi-Automatic Pistol”, It is a single shot handgun capable of carrying only ONE shot per pull of the trigger !! And internally carrying up to a state maximum number of 10 addition cartridges. With the ability of reloading the pistol chamber with a fresh cartridge after each shot, the trigger MUST be reset each time in order to fire the gun an additional time. Thus the ” Semi Automatic Reloading Firearm” or as the writer put it an assault with a Semi-Automatic firearm. Whether it be a Pistol or a Revolver the charge is still assault!
But as most of us know the news media likes to expand on an already bad situation!!!
If you are going to talk firearms GET TRAINED !!!
