SAN MARCOS — The 2nd annual San Marcos Fitness Roundup, a 5K run/walk, 11K trail run and post-race shindig, was held April 9 under cool conditions and sunny skies. Both races started at 8 a.m. near the Cal State San Marcos campus Mangrum Track & Soccer Field.
Organized by Carlsbad-based In Motion, Inc., the San Marcos Fitness Roundup featured the San Marcos Community 5K Run/Walk — a relatively flat, 3.1-mile course around the college campus and surrounding city streets, and the Double Peak Challenge 11K.
The Challenge is an approximately seven-mile, mostly-trail run to Double Peak, the highest point in the 230-acre Double Peak Park. Both races finished on the Mangrum Track. Over 350 runners and walkers finished the 5K and 11K events.
Glenn Racz, 31, of Carlsbad won the men’s division of the 5K in 16 minutes, 42 seconds. Defending champion Jessica Brothers, 29, of San Marcos, won the women’s 5K race in 19:05. In the grueling 11K competition, defending champion David Kloz, 36, of Oceanside, was the first across the finish line, winning wire-to-wire in 42:38 bettering his 2010 time by 38 seconds (43:16). Linda Vigil, 42, of Carlsbad won the women’s division, finishing in 52:03.
“It’s a fun event in my backyard,” Kloz said. “Who doesn’t want to run up and down that hill?”
