Fitness enthusiasts step up the challenge

SAN MARCOS — The inaugural San Marcos Fitness Roundup, a 5K run/walk and 11K trail run, attracted 277 fitness enthusiasts on March 13, according to event organizer In Motion, Inc.
Held in collaboration with the city of San Marcos and Cal State San Marcos, the San Marcos Fitness Roundup featured something for everyone. The San Marcos Community 5K Run/Walk was held on a relatively flat course around the Cal State San Marcos campus and the surrounding city streets. The Double Peak Challenge 11K course was a challenging, mostly trail run up to Double Peak Park and back. Both events finished on the Mangrum Track at the Cal State San Marcos campus.
Sergio Gonzalez, 23, of Oceanside won the men’s division of the 5K in 15 minutes, 24 seconds. Jessica Brothers, 28, of Carlsbad claimed the women’s title in 18:52. In the grueling 11K competition, David Kloz, 35, of Oceanside was the first across the finish line, winning in 43:16. Joey Bonfiglio, 33, of Carlsbad won the women’s division, finishing in 48:25.
Participants were treated to a lively post-race festival around the Mangrum Track on the Cal State San Marcos campus.
