Father pleads not guilty to endangering young son

ESCONDIDO — A 33-year-old man facing charges that he left his 12-month-old son in a hot car with the windows rolled up and the doors locked was ordered to stay away from the boy, a Superior Court judge ruled Sept. 2.
At his arraignment in a Vista courtroom, Artemio Diaz pleaded not guilty to felony child endangerment charges. If convicted, he faces up to six years in prison.
Prosecutors allege Diaz left his child in the sweltering car around 6 p.m. Aug. 30 as he shopped in the Northgate Market on North Escondido Boulevard in Escondido. Authorities believe Diaz was gone for 25 to 35 minutes with the outside temperature registering in around 96 degrees.
The baby wasn’t injured, investigators said.
Diaz’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 15. He currently remains in custody on $100,000 bail.
