DEL MAR — For the first time in more than 10 years, the Del Mar Public Works Department expanded its staff by adding a deputy director. Eric Minicilli will provide construction management services — a job that would otherwise have been outsourced to consultants — for ongoing and upcoming projects, including the 21st Street sewer pump station and 17th Street safety center.
He was previously the associate engineer for Coronado. “So he has beach and local community knowledge,” David Scherer, Del Mar’s director of public works, said.
Minicilli earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Loyola Marymount University. He also holds master’s degrees in construction management and civil engineering from the University of California Berkeley and public administration from San Diego State. He is a state licensed and registered civil engineer and contractor.
“He has more than enough qualifications to provide engineering inspection and engineering support for the department,” Scherer said.
Minicilli was the unanimous choice of the selection committee, which included the assistant city manager and two other public works directors, Scherer said.
Although the library remodel and roof repair is not a city contract, Minicilli is currently overseeing that expansion because it is a city building. He is also helping to supervise current drainage projects and construction at the Camino del Mar and 4th Street intersection.
Minicilli is originally from Rome, Italy, but he was raised in North County and currently resides in Rancho Peñasquitos. His new position allows him to work closer to home and is an “excellent employment opportunity,” he said.
“I’m looking forward to really attacking a lot of these (capital improvement plan) projects,” Minicilli said. “It’s going to be a nice place to work and I’m very excited.”
