DAY IN A CHAIR

Sandi Rush, of Carlsbad, and Stacey Tyree, of Mission Hills, participated in this year’s The HeadNorth Foundation Challenge, Day in a Chair, held April 10. HeadNorth, a nonprofit organization hosted the event which allows able-bodied individuals to experience every day life as a spinal cord injury survivor. Eleven teams of two participants, one a spinal cord injury survivor and the other an able-bodied volunteer, spent up to eight hours in wheelchairs. Each team participated in various challenges individuals in wheelchairs face during their typical day, such as cooking breakfast, walking the dog, playing tennis, cruising the boardwalk and shopping. HeadNorth Foundation provides essential support and guidance to individuals and families affected by spinal cord injury, while championing a cure for paralysis. Courtesy photo

That was a great day for me! Didnt realize all the things I take for granted having been in a chair for 23 years to watch someone who is not in a chair struggle. Stacey was a good sport about it and she even took to handcycling!! An experience that all should have in broadening the understanding of why we need to keep things accessible as some day we all will become disabled in one form or another as we age. Thank you Stacey! You are a champion for taking on A Day in a Chair :-)
