ENCINITAS — The pounding drums and fast guitar set the stage for a festive afternoon Aug. 2 at Moonlight Beach, as the Surf Kings entertained the crowd of approximately 2,000 people.
Sponsored by the Encinitas Parks and Recreation Department, the concert is part of a series featuring four bands with distinct styles on the first and third Sundays of July and August. Known as the Summer Sunday Concerts by the Sea, each event is free and open to the public.
“This is a great way to spend the afternoon,” said Poway resident Louis Simon. “I didn’t know we were in for this kind of treat when we decided to come to the beach this morning.”
Encinitas resident Julie Blair came to the concert for numerous reasons. “I always try to see the Surf Kings. They’re awesome,” she said. Blair said she tries to support local artists whenever she can. “It’s important, besides, this band is playing the true surf music at the beach,“ she said. “But other than the band, it’s just a really good time with everyone down here at the beach.”
The series is in its 13th year and more popular than ever. “I can see how free events like this would attract even more people with the economy the way it is,” said Jerry Laferty, a visitor from Arizona. “Families just can’t afford to spend a lot of money on nonessential items like entertainment, so it’s nice to have something so enjoyable that doesn’t cost a penny.”
The Devastators, a Reggae band, will end the series with a concert Aug. 16 from 3 to 5 p.m.
Organizers suggest arriving early to find parking and a spot on the sand in front of the stage.
