Company selected to develop El Corazon

OCEANSIDE — After 16 years of planning and community input, City Council unanimously voted on Aug. 31 to select Sudberry Properties to develop El Corazon park and business area.
“One of the most important things that have happened in 25 years is El Corazon,” Mayor Jim Wood said.
Sudberry Properties was selected because its design plan best reflected the specific plan for the 465-acre site.
The plan includes 20 multiuse fields, open space, and a business park. Twenty temporary fields will be installed immediately.
“We are committed to putting the fields in first,” said Colton Sudberry, president of Sudberry Properties. “The fields are not contingent with the commercial development happening.”
The multiuse fields will be home for San Diego Surf Cup tournament games that generate an attendance of 120,000.
They will also be used for other tournaments and by local teams during the week. The Soccer Club of Oceanside will be a major local user of the fields. The club boasts over 2,000 youth player.
“The direct impact to our kids is immeasurable,” Soccer Club of Oceanside coach Frank Zimmerman said.
Stirling Development was praised for its out of the box ideas, but was not selected. Its proposed plan included an extreme sports complex and medical and holistic health facilities.
