Volunteers led by the members of South Vista Communities, a resident activist group, cleaned the shores of Buena Creek from the Burlington Coat Factory off Sycamore Avenue to the shopping center at the intersection of Shadowridge Drive and Watson Way, on Sept. 20. Some 60 people were involved, including representatives from the Cub Scouts, the Alpha Project and Green Oak Ranch.
“As an organization, we wanted to do something that made a physical difference in our community,” South Vista Communities President Stephanie Jackel said. “That area is one of the gateways to Vista, coming off the freeway. That made it an appropriate target to be cleaned up.”
This is the second time South Vista Communities has tidied the creek. In 2006, volunteers filled three 40-foot containers with trash. This time, the group filled just two containers and was done an hour earlier.
Still, the group retrieved 11 shopping carts from the creek bed as well as an assortment of garbage including tires, mattresses, cushions, a stop sign, and the guts of several garage door engines.
“There were three sets of that,” Jackel said. “God knows where that came from!”
