Commodore chosen for Harbor Days

OCEANSIDE — Ray Duncan, a local icon at the Oceanside Harbor, will be this year’s Honorary Commodore for Oceanside Harbor Days on Sept. 19 and Sept. 20. Duncan worked for the city of Oceanside for more than 48 years in the Aquatics Department, retiring just this past July.
Oceanside Harbor Days will feature arts and craft exhibits, great food, live entertainment and fun activities for the entire family, complete with roaming pirates. The event is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day and is free to the public.
“Ray has always been a part of our harbor and beaches and has historically played a part in planning Harbor Days,” David Nydegger, CEO of the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce, said. “It is most fitting that he is this year’s Honorary Commodore.”
Duncan started his career with the city of Oceanside in 1961 as a senior life guard and in 1968 was promoted to aquatics superintendent. He remained dedicated to overseeing Oceanside’s beaches and swimming pools, culminating his career as the manager of Oceanside Beaches and Harbor.
“Ray is always the first to participate, volunteer and can always get the job done,” Don Hadley, Oceanside deputy city manager, said. “I miss his professionalism, dedication, humor and common sense each and every day. Part of Harbor Day’s success is directly attributable to Ray’s involvement.”
In addition, Oceanside Harbor Days 2009 will be dedicated to two longtime Oceanside residents who loved the harbor; John Steiger, an Oceanside businessman and former city councilman and Rosemary Jones, city treasurer.
The Welcoming Ceremonies for Harbor Days will be held at noon Sept. 19 on the Main Stage, just north of Joe’s Crab Shack. The spirited Captain Jack Sparrow will be the emcee this year, keeping the ceremonies lively.
